From Time Out Abu Dhabi Eating Out 2010
A soundtrack of indie hits from the past and a crowd more British than Churchill playing a Union Jack guitar provides the background for most trips to Heroes. A live band fills in the gaps between CDs, but this defiant expat bar has always been like a beginner’s guide to Brit-nostalgia pubs abroad, from football on the telly to a menu more homely than a thousand pie and pea suppers. For some reason they do insist upon confiscating all bags at the door. Quite what they fear being brought in is unimaginable – nutrition perhaps?
The menu is heavy on the stodge, but it’s no bad thing. Aside from the usual pies, fish and battered malarkey, the burgers are probably the main draw, with the choice of additional toppings putting most pizza joints to shame. And if you have the stomach of a 40 stone man, the 1kg burger is a test of anyone’s trouser elastic. Ribs, all-day breakfasts, steak and kidney pies, they all come in huge servings, enough to make even a caveman start to reach for the fruit salad, but the quality is on the whole good for what it is. You know what you’re getting with Heroes and, at times, that’s no bad thing.
