A taste of South Africa in Abu Dhabi

Okay, we don’t really think that food can unite a nation, but we do know that a good meal, in good company, can go a long way to making everything seem alright in the world, even if just for a short while. So, while it would be crass to suggest that South Africa connected over its food, we do know that the country’s dishes, and its steak, in particular, are just two reasons that it is held in such high esteem the world over.

The Meat Co launched a new menu a little while ago, but with South Africa’s Day of Reconcilliation coming up (December 16) we thought now would be the perfect time to dive into it and see what it has to offer.

The menu takes inspiration from the company’s South African heritage. Old favourites such as the boerewors, rib meat burger and hanging skewers are still available, but are joined by new dishes such as prime steak tartare (made with fillet mignon), rib meat “cigars” (braised meat with truffle pesto and roasted mushrooms, wrapped in filo pastry) and wagyu bresaola with Goat’s Cheese. As ever there is a smattering of seafood dishes available for the less meat-inclined out there.

Our pick has to be the prime 1.2kg tomahawk steak, however. The herb and mustard coated cut of meat is grilled and then roasted in the oven before being served bone-in on a chopping board.

It is a perfect example of the quality meat that comes out of South Africa, and, being enough to share, will bring at least people togther whenever its ordered.
