Introducing... Dessert nachos

We’ve seen (and eaten) some pretty outrageous (in good way, of course) dishes in this country. Recently, there seems to a trend of picking two classic comfort eats that have absolutely nothing to do with each other and pairing them together. For example, mac and cheese in a cone, grilled cheese sandwich burger, waffle burger (as seen on page 7). The endless list is crazy and inspired – and we love it.

The guys over at our reigning Best Sports Bar, Stars ’N’ Bars are getting in on the act, too. Say hello to their ingenious dessert nachos.

The dish was conceived during a brief, 10-minute chat between the restaurant’s general manager and executive sous chef. “Since we serve Tex-Mex food at Stars ’n’ Bars, Randolph [Hernandez] asked if we could come up with a Mexican-inspired dessert,” recalls the creative chef, Panky Vig. And what’s more Mexican than nachos?

But there is more than meets the eye with this colourful and sweet bowl. So, just what goes into it? Well, hidden at the base are three different flavours of ice cream – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Next, comes the Mexican touch. “Our home-made tortilla chips are dusted in cinnamon sugar before being placed over the ice cream,” says Vig. A variety of fresh berries are then strewn around, along with dollops of cream. The final add-ons are a few swirls of chocolate and strawberry sauce and sprigs of fresh mint. Done.

The sharing dessert is ready to be devoured by two, three, four or more. “Its size and price makes it a fun dessert for a group of friends,” adds Vig. And all that is left to do is round up the troops and dive right in. Don’t mind if we do.
