South African boutique café tashas opened the doors to its Abu Dhabi outlet two months ago and there’s been a buzz of activity around it. Its cool, breezy vibe, well-presented and tasty food, and picturesque marina-front setting, have been tempting a steady stream of customers since it launched.

At each of its locations (13 across South Africa and one in Dubai), tashas serves a “Classic” menu – a standard offering at every location, and an “Inspired By” menu, which is specific to each outlet.

The carefully-curated, inspired menu at Al Bateen features Spanish eats and drinks. “There are lots of tapas and sharing plates,” says Tanith Quait, who looks after training tashas’ staff for the international brand. And it’s that communal spirit the restaurant is trying to foster, as is evident with its seating arrangements – the outdoor area, for example, has a huge table to bring people together. The dish that encompasses this philosophy best is the seafood paella, a Spanish dish that’s synonymous with sharing, available on the “Inspired By” menu that’s unique to the capital. A sumptuous medley of mussels, prawns, clams and squid make up the seafood. “We use beef chorizo to give the dish that smoky-paprika flavour,” Quait explains. “And the final touch is a dollop of garlic aioli that adds a creaminess to the dish.”

Well, there’s nothing left to do but get stuck in. Should we save a spot for you at the table?
