When a restaurant is this upfront about what its brunch entails, going so far as to boast about the fun times to soon be had in its name, it is only fair that it delivers what the label says. After all, weekend brunching is a sport we take very seriously here in Abu Dhabi, and the competition is fierce.

Kuzbara, the bright and cheery all-day dining spot at the new Marriott Downtown Abu Dhabi, makes its intentions clear from the minute you walk in, inviting guests to “Eat. Play. Laugh.” at its first shot at a family-friendly Friday brunch.

A PlayStation gaming centre is set up in the outside lounge, to entertain while you wait to enter. As you make your way in, you’re escorted through the restaurant and introduced to the venue’s layout. A nice touch, as sometimes navigating a brunch can be overwhelming.

The Marriott’s dining options – JW Steakhouse, Velocity, Central Grounds – are all present with their greatest dishes. A good place to start, however, is at the salad station. It’s the usual line-up, but you will find yourself going back for seconds and thirds. The tuna Niçoise is as tasty as it is colourful, with the lightly-seared squares of deep pink fish perfectly cooked. The sweet potato and mushroom salads are also good options – fresh and delicious.

The sushi counter is small but rolls out the classics. You will also find an Indian street food corner, a grilling station and an iced crate of fresh seafood. But if you’re after some quality cuts of meat that will completely bowl you over, queue up for the slow-braised beef ribs. The bite-sized morsels dissolve in your mouth, without a hint of the dryness that often plagues slow-cooked meats. They are sticky, delicious and served on a celeriac purée.

Pub grub fans will also be pleased with the selection of sliders, lobster rolls and spicy chicken wings.

The dessert counter is filled with appealing pastries, cakes and Middle Eastern sweets. A few steps away are mini versions of Central Grounds’ signature freakshakes. Finishing two is a piece of cake.As far as the entertainment is concerned, there is plenty on offer. The DJ on duty controls the rhythm for the afternoon with her tunes, as a wandering caricaturist sketches away, and a magician keeps the kids spellbound. The gaming action continues with a foosball table, giant jenga set and a dart board.

The staff require a special mention. They remain attentive, friendly and courteous throughout, keeping glasses filled and tables attended to even when it gets busy, making the brunch a complete package.
