If mapping global food trends and following celebrity chefs is your preferred pastime, you are in for a treat this year. Starting this month, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr will launch a series of pop-up food events that will feature some of the biggest names on the world culinary circuit.

The chef set to kick off this series is Devon-born Kirk Westaway. With a prestigious Michelin star pinned firmly on his chef’s whites, Westaway will be taking charge of proceedings at The Quayside from January 19 to 23.

At the moment, the Englishman leads a team of highly-skilled culinary pros at JAAN, Swissôtel The Stamford, Singapore. He describes his cuisine as “simple, yet complex” (if you know what he means...). Westaway’s profound respect for each ingredient ensures that he finds a way to utilise every bit of it – a trait he is well-known for.

Diners at JAAN, his Singaporean home, are encouraged to eat with their eyes and palates. Sophisticated presentations dazzle Westaway’s guests at the start of their meal, before they’re bowled over by the memorable food. It’s little wonder then that both JAAN and Westaway have earned a number of awards and accolades over the years. The intimate French restaurant in Singapore seats only 40 diners at a time, and the event at the Fairmont is slated to be just as exclusive with only 45 coveted covers available each evening (so you will want to book your spot as soon as you’re done reading this article, then).

The agenda for each day is simple. Guests will be greeted at the hotel’s stylish Latin-themed lounge Puesta del Sol, with welcome drinks and canapés, before being escorted to The Quayside, a picturesque outdoor venue that offers some truly mesmerising views of the serene Abu Dhabi Creek, as they await this culinary extravaganza.

Westaway has crafted a special set menu for the occasion that reflects his unique cooking style and promises to take guests on a gourmet journey. It starts with majestic oyster, caviar and heirloom tomato burrata, followed by organic soft poached hen’s egg and Scottish langoustine. Guests will then move onto luscious Wagyu Short Rib with coarse Italian Polenta and Black Halibut, before finishing the evening off with a lovely combination of white ivory chocolate and Devon tea.

With a passion for quality produce, Westaway’s culinary style focuses on creating profiles and techniques that enhance the natural flavours of each unique ingredient. And his menu that will be on display for the five days is reflective of that.

The remaining line-up for this exclusive series by the Fairmont will be confirmed shortly, with more top chefs getting ready to take the baton from Westaway.

And judging by what the series is serving up for starters, foodies in Abu Dhabi are in for some truly world-class dining. Who’s in?
Dhs499 (five-course set menu), Dhs599 (seven-course set menu), Dhs299 (beverage pairing, five glasses). January 19-23, 7pm onwards. The Quayside, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Bain Al Jessrain, Khor Al Maqta (02 654 3238).
