There are many reasons why McGettigan’s is so popular in the capital. From the buzzing vibe and warm Irish welcome to the live music and sports coverage, it’s almost certain that the city’s brunchers have ended up at McGettigan’s after their Friday special at some point or another. But today we’ve come to find out if the pub’s own Friday brunch is worth going straight there.

Despite the sheer number of people, the service remains top notch. There is a buffet selection and à la carte menu on offer. The live stations feature dishes such as slow roasted rib of Irish beef, Yorkshire pudding, turkey breast and everything you’d expect from a traditional Sunday roast.

Having not had breakfast, we opt for the eggs Benedict served with crispy hash browns. Served on a breakfast muffin, the dish is the perfect start to our brunch.

Throughout the afternoon we experiment with as many options from the menu as we can possibly stomach. From the classic fish and chips and wagyu beef chilli nachos to the beefy lasagne al forno, we simply can’t find anything to complain about. It might not be fine dining, but it’s the type of grub you would expect from an Irish pub – but better. In fact, the lightly crisped fried chicken is one of the best we’ve tasted.

The one thing we can’t get enough of, however, is the French toast. The egg-soaked bread is served with vanilla custard and is quite frankly magnificent. It’s the perfect snack to transition from the savoury mains to the sweet desserts.

All of the sweets are impressive. We head straight for the lemongrass and orange crème brûlée and Oreo cheesecake. Both are tasty without being overly sugary, so we manage to devour them without any difficulty. A fine end to a thoroughly enjoyable brunch.

The Bottom Line
A hearty selection of food that’s value for money.
