Abu Dhabi has been named the safest city on the planet in a new international poll.

The emirate outranked hundreds of cities in a wide-ranging survey taking in data from 334 countries.

The UAE capital had the lowest crime index in the past six months and the highest safety level, in the poll carried out by Numbeo, a website which collates data about cities and countries across the globe.

Abu Dhabi left second place city, Basel of Switzerland, trailing well in its wake with its overall safety score.

Respondents to the index highlighted Abu Dhabi’s very low crime levels and scored it at 94 percent for a general feeling of safety in the city.

The welcome news comes hot on the heels of our emirate being named the second best city in the world in an Ipsos City Index, overtaking cosmopolitan capitals Paris and London in the survey.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was also recently named the second best landmark in the world, rating higher than the likes of the Taj Mahal and the Sydney Opera House.

His Excellency Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General of Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, said: “Abu Dhabi has a solid reputation for safety with a virtually crime-free society. It is a priority when choosing a city to visit or live in and provides peace of mind knowing that you can feel safe anywhere you go in Abu Dhabi.

The result of this index supports Abu Dhabi’s position as the leading city in the world to live, work and do business in, and highlights an aspect of life in Abu Dhabi that is a matter of great pride to all residents.

“The position of Abu Dhabi in this global ranking is a testament to the ongoing efforts to establish the Emirate as a destination of distinction with international standards of safety that are on par with global metropolises. Whether visiting for business or for an extended stay, we hope that our unique Emirati hospitality continues to enrich the experiences of any visitor to Abu Dhabi.”

The index, which ranked 334 countries globally, is an estimation of overall level of crime in a given city or a country. Crime levels lower than 20 are considered as “very low,”, with Abu Dhabi’s coming in at an impressive 13.54.

It’s safe to say, Abu Dhabi is a great place to live.
