Many people use public holidays for a mini-break, to relax or simply to spend some quality time with their family.

Here in the UAE, planning ahead can be tricky as many of the big holidays are dictated by the phases of the moon and are only made official days beforehand.

But with a little know-how, you can be confident of some of this year's holidays.

Here's a list of expected public holidays in 2018 and how long you can expect to have off work.

  • New Year, Jan 1 - One day
  • Israa & Miaraj Night*, April 13 - One day
  • Ramadan expected to begin*, May 17
  • Eid Al Fitr*, Jun 15 - Three days
  • Hajj season*, Aug 12
  • Arafat Day*, Aug 20 - One day
  • Eid Al Adha*, Aug 21 - Three days
  • Hijri New Year's Day*, Sep 11 - One day
  • Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday (PBUH)*, Nov 19 - One day
  • Commemoration Day, Nov 30 - One day
  • UAE National Day, Dec 2-3 - Two days
*Islamic holiday exact dates may differ from date given.
