Have you noticed how taking your kids along to a festival has now become “a thing”? Some of the biggest gigs around the world are responding to this and are in turn making themselves more child-friendly than ever, with kids’ zones, circus tents, clean toilets and salubrious showers to attract the parent contingent and their band of mini-ravers. Here are four of the best to catch if you’re travelling this summer.

Europe
Kendal Calling, Cumbria, United Kingdom

Rudimental, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Madness are on the bill this year. There are three dedicated kids’ areas, a family cinema, creative performances, cartoon workshops, DJing masterclasses and traditional fairground rides. Don’t miss the infamous silent disco and secure a tent in the families-only camping zone for an incredible weekend of music and madness.

North America
Calgary Folk Music Festival, Calgary, Canada

The creation of an idyllic small town, this festival is perfect for a long weekend. It has song contests, lantern parades, an artisan market and an award-winning environmental programme for its audience.

Africa
Lake of Stars, Malawi, Africa

Taking inspiration from festival stalwarts like Glastonbury and WOMAD, Lake of Stars was created to help raise money for Malawi’s developing economy. Set on the palm-fringed shores of Lake Malawi, its children’s programme includes storytelling, drumming workshops and jumping castles.

Australia
Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bay, Australia

The Strokes, Years and Years and Jake Bugg are among this year’s headliners. Little Splendour is an entire field of wonder dedicated to families within the main event and has giant teepees for dress-up, storytelling sessions and giant board games to play. There are puppet and jester shows in the Big Top and wagons to hire for trucking your little crew around fields. Oh, and it’s free for under 12s.
