1 Beach Rotana
Best for kids
Chilling: Sprawled along the back of the Beach Rotana is this massive beach club. As well as a moderate-sized beach, there’s a giant adult pool, with an adjoining kids pool to boot and a few patches of lawn. Once upon a time, the beach club would have faced an idyllic desert island over the bay, but now you’ll be staring out over a building site. However, what with the current Abu Dhabi construction boom, this is the case at many of the city’s hotels so you’ll just have to get used to it. Thankfully, the workers seem to down tools at the weekend, so you’re not going to be disturbed by the clatter of concrete pouring and hammer blows. The place gets mightily busy at weekends, although there are plenty of loungers to go around – they just won't be in a prime poolside position if you arrive late.
Getting active: When you’re bored of sweating away in the sun, you’ll find the Beach Rotana has one of the best selections of water sports in the capital. The ways you can get wet include water skiing, knee boarding, banana boat rides, wakeboarding, windsurfing and canoeing.
Keeping the kids quiet: We’re sure you love your kids to bits, but now and again even the most devoted parent needs a break. Thankfully, the Beach Rotana has a crèche that has its own playground and basketball court. Use of these facilities is free for beach club members and hotel guests. You could also pack them off for a swimming lesson, or let them loose in the supervised children’s pool.
Eating and drinking: The Bay View bar serves up some decent poolside snacks, including a hearty burger or, if you’re intent on keeping that beach body trim, a fine seafood salad. There’s also a swim-up bar should you like to imbibe while half submerged.
It’ll set you back Dhs150 per person per day in the week, and Dhs230 at weekends and public holidays. Should you be up for making your visits here a regular occurrence, full six-month membership of the beach club and gym will leave you Dhs8,000 worse off if you’re a guy and Dhs5,650 if you’re a lady.
