The Tavern

Review: Old-school pub that’s good for football and music Reviews

Some people seem to think Abu Dhabi is always quiet, both literally and figuratively. We all know that’s not the case, especially those of us who frequent The Tavern.

The watering hole has the look and feel of a classic English pub. There’s a lot of brown everywhere, wooden flooring, celing and bar, exposed brick walls and brown leather seating. We look at all of those things as plus points, by the way. One niggle is the low ceiling.

It’s great for cosiness, but isn’t good for any non-smokers in the room.

At any given time the atmosphere is buzzing, helped by the great deals, live music and football matches on big screens.

We find ourselves making our way through the narrow corridors to get to the main bar on a Friday afternoon. The heaving throng in the packed room seem to have been enjoying themselves, such is the buzz for the Friday post-brunch bash. From 4.30pm every week there are drinks and food deals just for the occasion.

There are plenty of people perched at the bar, but service is still swift, with a lot of staff available to take our order.

It’s happy hour (noon until 8pm every day), so we’re looking at less than Dhs30 for a pint of hops and similar prices for other drinks.
There’s a live band, too, playing an eclectic mix of hits from across the decades.

There is a top selection of hops, with a weekly special coming in at Dhs18, as well as ladies’ night every Wednesday and drinks deals on Thursdays and Saturdays as well.

It’s all great fun and makes The Tavern the kind of place you want to return to time and again, just like all the other regulars at the bar.

The bottom line

A cost-effective, classic English pub.

I like:
- Bartenders and waiter are friendly and helpful
- English pub like (smokey smell, english beers and snacks)
- Great live entertainment
I mention:
- If you can't stand cigarette smell, just don't go!
Overall, great for a pint after work or a catch with friends good old English style

Usually acceptable pub grub with a fair selection of beers. Probably not the best place to go for those with short attention spans who need lots of stimulation though, especially the young and trendy crowd. More like a typical British pub in a quieter town most of the time. The service is usually good and I've never had any issues with bills or wrong drinks.
