This is a pub that’s been in Abu Dhabi for a decent amount of time, and you can tell. If that sounds mean to you, it’s certainly not supposed to.

What 3rd Avenue has that a lot of newer, and far cooler, venues lack is a worn-in feel, a sense of knowing exactly what it is and being happy with it. British expats will know precisely what’s in store for them the moment they see the signage from the street outside – a no-frills pub with a mostly brown, wooden interior, hops on tap and burgers and chips on the food menu.

We’re sitting at a high-stool late on a Friday evening, long after we should have gone home, watching the covers band. We defy anyone to go along and not sing along. You’ll probably end up ordering another round of drinks, too, to make sure you see the whole set.

Drinks are very reasonably priced, with pints of hops coming in at Dhs30, glasses of grape a few dirhams less and some shorts hovering around the Dhs25 mark. Mixed drinks will set you back a bit more, but we’re not sure there’ll be too many people coming along for the mixology. Happy hours run every day from 7pm to 9pm, too.

Service is perfunctory, if not friendly, but that’s hardly a problem in a pub. There will be some people who find 3rd Avenue a little too rough around the edges, but we’re made of sterner stuff than that and don’t want to spend all of our time in the likes of 99 Sushi Bar and COYA. Our bank managers wouldn’t be too happy if we tried to, anyway.

If you’re after an authentic British pub experience, try 3rd Avenue during the weekend’s big match (and stay for the band later). We’ll see you at the bar.

The bottom line
For when you want a simple night out.
