There is a warmth and charm about a really good English pub that is hard to beat.

From the cozy booths and traditional stained glass windows, to the friendly welcome from staff and fellow punters alike, such a place can truly feel like a home from home.

So when you pack up your bags and make your own home thousands of miles away in the sun-soaked UAE capital, you’d be forgiven for wishing you could roll up your favourite watering-hole and bring it along with you.
You would only end up exceeding the maximum luggage weight capacity, of course, but within seconds of walking into the homely Captain’s Arms we get that familiar, fuzzy feeling.

The setting is like a Garden of England itself, with the plush greenery of The Village making for a scenic stroll to the venue, complete with a traditional Brit pub-style facade.

Once inside, we are struck by the old-style wood-panelled decor with barrel tables and a busy bar where you can happily perch.

There is also a large outdoor terrace that is perfect for the winter weather.

The largely British clientele that fill up the lively pub also make this feel like a little corner of England right here in the Middle East.

The Captain’s Arms toasted its 20th anniversary last month and it is easy to see why it is still doing such a roaring trade, thanks to its good range of beverages and a happy hour deal running from opening until 7pm.

There is plenty of pub grub to try out, too, including a bumper selection of juicy burgers that are well worth getting your hands on.

If you are after a fun night out, then enjoy some cheer here.

The bottom line
Great deals and a warm welcome await.

Fact 1. Bar service in most places in Abu Dhabi is usually sullen and incompetent, so that's a wash.
Fact 2. Get used to paying 30 chips a pint in most places or stay home and invite your friends over.
Fact 3. Sitting outside with friends and a pint can't be beat. How can you go wrong? The lack of music means you can actually talk. Captain's Arms remains my favourite place the city for a few beers. And, to respond to the previous reviewer, nobody has ever mistaken me for a "high roller."
