We just love the sheer variety of the Abu Dhabi social scene.

Whether you want to get dressed to impress at a swanky bar, chill out at a laid-back spot or have a big night out at a loud and proud pub, you will never be left thirsting for more.

But one thing the city can lack – due to its set-up of grand hotels taxi rides apart – is a good old-fashioned bar hop.

Taking in the atmosphere at a few different venues, each with their own character and vibe, without the trouble of a car ride is a treat that is taken for granted in many countries.

So that is part of the reason why we are always happy to wander into The Village at Le Méridien Abu Dhabi, a picturesque garden scene, home to NRG Sports Café, traditional pub Captain’s Arms, Oasis Poolbar and a smattering of dining options. Wherever you start on your village tour, NRG makes for a good ‘sport of call’.

You can tell straight away this is a top spot to pitch up for your sporting fix.

The walls of the industrial-style venue are adorned with football shirts (though we are midly irked that they don’t fit happily into their frames) while colourful etchings of footballs and rugby balls take centre stage behind the bar.

The bar is packed with a host of TV screens beaming events from across the globe, while if you want to play rather than watch, you can shoot pool.

The friendly staff are part of the winning team, too, wearing shirts with their names and squad numbers on the back.

There are a fine variety of hops and happy hour deals and plenty of pub grub. This is a great place to unwind and catch a game.

The bottom line
A fun and friendly haunt for sports fans.
