La Cava

Review: This upmarket grape bar exudes old school class with more than a whiff of gentlemen’s club Discuss this article

We all love a simple pub, but every now and then there’s nothing more satisfying than indulging in a bit of old-school sophistication. La Cava is not a drop of fancy grape short of a Mayfair gentleman’s club. It’s full-on posh. This grape bar is so old-money swank, it’s like the beverage den equivalent of a gold embroidered smoking jacket. It’s James Bond in a Savile Row suit, Elizabeth Taylor in Tatler, and the embodiment of Lord Snooty from the Beano.

On our latest visit, we even overhear one customer telling a woman about his friend from home: “He’s great,” he says excitedly. “Super posh, like me.”

Designed to look like a grape cellar, La Cava is all about the grape, which is of an excellent quality and is reasonably priced. The snappily-dressed (of course) sommelier will help you choose the perfect fit to your taste, and there is also a limited food menu. Wednesdays are for grape tasting between 7.30pm and 9.30pm, and three glasses will set you back a very reasonable Dhs150. And, back by popular demand, there is also a Tuesday burger and châteaux night. For Dhs150 receive a burger and two glasses of grape, as well as a cooking class where you can cook your own meal with the chef.

Let’s not forget that there is also a range of cigars, and a back smoking room with large leather armchairs that feels like the sort of hideaway where plans are concocted, and the future of countries is decided.
If you’re after a bit of “bants” with the lads, this is not your spot. If, however, you want somewhere with surrounds that will make you feel more well-to-do just through the power of osmosis, it would be hard to do better than this.

The bottom line

A bit of posh for less dosh than you’d think.
