The Hilton Abu Dhabi is almost as old as the UAE, having opened in 1973, and Jazz Bar & Dining is its stalwart nightspot. It underwent a revamp last year, introducing a new international menu that includes steaks, caviar and a ceviche of sea bass, which it calls its signature dish.

By all accounts, however, much of what makes the bar popular has stayed more or less the same. The main focus is a blue-lit stage behind the bar, and with good reason – house band DNA play from 10pm Monday to Saturday, so don’t expect to get much serious discussion in after that. While not as jazz-focused as the bar’s name might suggest, they play excellent pop, rock and funk covers. Imagine Lionel Richie and Gloria Estefan were in a band with a group of really top-notch musicians. It’s hard not to sing along, although the seating layout has not been designed with dancing in mind.

What this place does offer that is in keeping with the spirit of backstreet jazz clubs, is that it’s dimly lit with no windows, making it feel like a music den. It is easy to get caught up in the evening and forget about the world outside. And bubbly is available by the glass.

It’s obvious why this bar has lasted. It’s a great spot to leave behind the small talk and just listen to the music. The service is good and the crowd is mixed.

They also offer a generous two ladies’ nights – “girls night out” Mondays and “bubbly” Wednesdays, both offering a selection of complimentary beverages for the ladies, and all that jazz.

The bottom line
An old favourite in a sophisticated setting, but limited jazz.

This jazz club and restaurant is totally fabulous
Our first experience of this club was when staying at the Hilton in 1996, the most amazing cocktails and the music - a great end to a perfect evening.
Since 1996, we have been visiting the city twice a year, totally hooked as visitors to this wonderful city, we always now eat in the restaurant first, and then enjoy the music afterwards

A great place, please keep going

This is a nice looking bar with good food, but whatever else it is, it is NOT a jazz bar. The musicians are good, but what you get is a set of absolutely unchallenging MOR pop. Music for people who don't really like music. Anyone turning up at this place expecting to hear anything remotely connected to Coltrane, Monk, Miles, Mingus or Parker will be massively disappointed.

we have been visiting the hilton hotel and the jazz bar since 1994 when we first met johnnie scot and his group. Although we have now moved to staying at the shangri la we still visit the Jazz Club at the hilton. There has been consistency of fabulous food and amazing jazz. Well worth a visit, the best night time place in AEU

Having lived in Abu Dhabi since 2002 I still find this place on top. The band ( Though changed faces several times) is great and weekends there are great to enjoy. the whole setting is nice and you feel relaxed with the tunes. Most people are classy and sing along.
