Since its first season back in 2004, the Abu Dhabi Festival has become a highlight in every culture vulture’s social calendar. With an aim to promote and develop the arts in the region, the festival covers a range of disciplines and genres. From jazz and opera, to visual arts and theatre, this year’s line-up promises to inspire and entertain audiences.

Critically acclaimed Emirati composer Mohammed Fairouz will set the ball rolling at the The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi on February 2 with a world premiere of his latest concerto, performed by the Bang on a Can All-Stars.

Next up will be the UAE debut of Saudi singer Mohamed Abdo (March 14), more than 40 years and 30-plus albums.

China’s National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra is also on the bill for March 24 and 25. This band of talented musicians is one of Asia’s most respected, with classical stalwarts such as Zubin Mehta, Lang Lang, Valery Gergiev and Myung-Wha Chung all having been associated with it over the years.

In an evening that promises to delight jazz connoisseurs, American trumpeter Wynton Marsalis will take to the stage on March 27. The much-lauded musician and composer already has a solid fan base here and has produced more than 80 records, which have sold millions of copies worldwide.

Meanwhile, fado music fans will be thrilled that Portuguese songstress Mariza (March 29) is also coming to town. Over the years she has collaborated with stars including Lenny Kravitz and Sting, and has played in concert halls across the world; she can now add Abu Dhabi to that list.

The last live show will see Grammy award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma team up with the Silk Road Ensemble for a performance the Wall Street Journal calls “vibrant and virtuosic”. It promises to be an unforgettable few months...
