The Red Bull Air Race World Championship gets off to a flying start in Abu Dhabi, but it’s not all about aeroplanes.

The Corniche will come alive on February 2 and 3 thanks to the season opener of the ‘F1 of the skies’ – the 11th time the capital has hosted the first race in the calendar.

As well as the race itself, there will be loads more entertainment on the ground.

The Nation Towers parking lot will be the scene of the Red Bull Car Park Drift qualifiers – with 16 of the UAE’s most skilful drivers getting the chance to represent the country in the final of the competition in September.

Now in its tenth year in the UAE, Red Bull Car Park Drift also includes drivers from Egypt, Kuwait, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey, Algeria, Jordan, Mauritius and Lebanon.

The event will take place on February 2 from 2pm.

Also taking place is the first UAE qualifier of Brazilian footballer Neymar Jr’s Five tournament.

Two teams of five play against each other – when one team scores, the other loses a player. The game ends when one side has no players left.

It’s open to players from across the emirates, who will be looking for a place in the UAE final in Sharjah on March 16.

Now in its third year, more than 60 countries from six continents will host qualifiers, with the prize a place here at the final in Brazil.

Back in the skies, JetPack Aviation’s David Mayman, better known as ‘Rocket Man’ will be putting in an appearance.

The CEO, co-founder and test pilot is the driving force behind the creation of jetpack he wears, which can fit in the boot of car flies up to a reported 96 kmph for up to 10 minutes.

From 11am, February 2-3. Corniche, Abu Dhabi.
